Who Sends Painters Work in Baton Rouge
A free guide from ConnectionsKept for specialty contractors. Painters are the example; the same logic applies to HVAC, plumbing, electrical, roofing and other trades.
The idea in one minute
Most of a specialty contractor's best jobs don't come from ads. They come from someone who is already managing the project or the customer: a builder, a remodeler, a designer, a property manager or a restoration company. These generalists are often the ones choosing which trade to call, so the question is not "how do I get more work?" but "who is already working with my future customers, and do they know me?"
Five kinds of partners to know
1. Custom home builders
Why they send work: every home needs painting at the end of the job, and schedules are tight.
What they want: a crew that shows up on the day it says it will, finishes on time and doesn't need hand-holding.
How to approach: ask who handles subcontractor onboarding and how they qualify a new painter.
2. Residential general contractors
Why they send work: they manage many trades on every job and are always short on reliable ones.
What they want: clear pricing, proof of license and insurance, and quick answers.
How to approach: offer to be the backup painter when their usual one is booked.
3. Remodelers and design-build firms
Why they send work: remodels touch several rooms and often need paint, trim and finish work.
What they want: clean work in lived-in homes and polished communication with homeowners.
How to approach: show photos of occupied-home jobs and explain how you protect the space.
4. Interior designers
Why they send work: color and finish are part of their design, and they need someone who executes it exactly.
What they want: attention to detail and willingness to follow a spec.
How to approach: offer a short sample or a consultation on a current project.
5. Restoration companies and property managers
Why they send work: after water, fire or storm damage, and between tenants, painting has to happen fast and repeatedly.
What they want: speed, flexibility and fair, predictable pricing.
How to approach: ask what their usual turnaround problem is and how you can solve it.
A short first call
Keep it simple and about them:
- "Hi, I'm [name] with [company], a painting contractor in [area]."
- "I'm not asking you to replace anyone. Which trade is hardest for you to cover right now?"
- "If it would help, I can be your backup when your usual painter is booked. What would you need from me to be considered?"
Make yourself easy to refer
- Have your license, insurance and a few photos ready to send in one message.
- Quote fast. Partners remember who answered first.
- Thank a partner every time they send work, and tell them how it went.
- Check in every month, even when there's nothing to ask for.
The hard part
None of this is complicated. What stops most contractors is time: finding the right people, getting a first conversation and then following up for months. That's what ConnectionsKept does for you.
